I was looking at Patric Shaw’s work on Flickr and thinking “man this guy is really really good”. His edgy fashion-esque portraits, many by the looks of things shot on film just blew away my prejudices about flickr being full of amateurs and hackneyed photography. I particularly love his recent picture of Patricia Clarkson.

It only turns out he’s an A list photographer shooting fashion beauty and portraiture for some very big clients. I fell out with flickr a while back but it really made me rethink my position towards it. Check out his flickr stream, his agency and his own site.

Anyone who familiar with this site will already know I’m always tinkering with it. At any given moment you’ll find me working on one concept or another. This is one for my portfolio site. The site is currently hosted at krop and whilst it works perfectly well it does feel like time for a change.

First up though – a little word of advice for anyone who is contemplating getting a site built by a web designer, friend, or the daughter of your next door neighbour:

buy the domain and hosting yourself.

I speak to so many people who tell the same story of not having access to their site because they’ve lost touch with the person who set the site up. Only today I was speaking to a friend from a cult Liverpool band who didn’t have the control he wanted over his site for that very reason. Don’t let the same happen to you.

Steve and I go way way back, playing in bands together in our twenties. In those days he was a drummer but was usually the best singer in the band, nowadays he is a full time singer. Great to see him and shoot a couple of portraits.

Just discovered the fantastic work of Brigitte Lacombe. She’s very much in the mold of the classic portrait photographer. You’ll find lot’s of black and white portraits and images shot on film sets in her portfolio. It’s right where I want to be as a photographer.

Stuart Xander of the band Xander and the Peace Pirates. A popular band on the local circuit who recently supported Bon Jovi.

Interesting fact number one: I taught Stuart guitar for a little while back when I worked at Liverpool Community College, where he claims I introduced him to the blues. Not sure if I want to take responsibility for that or not!

Interesting fact number 2: Many years later I became friends with his brother Keith who is a very fine lead guitar player. Keith is missing his right hand and plays with the aid of a claw. He actually tapes a plectrum onto the end and plays a mean blues guitar.
