I’m so used to what goes on backstage at a gig, that most of the time I don’t give it a second glance. Props, guitars, clothes… semi naked dancers (some things are harder to ignore than others). The tough thing for me as a photographer is organising this chaos into workable images. My natural style tends towards simple strong imagery with not too much going on in the photo, but backstage it’s a struggle adhering to this philosophy. So I’m learning to embrace the chaos, treating the action and the tight spaces as an aid and not a hindrance.

I’ve also gone with a more documentary approach for this series. Instead of spending time polishing each image to perfection, they are pretty much as they were in camera. I’m getting a tad tired of the endless stream of the perfect images I see everywhere, it’s getting just a little too slick (I’m as guilty of this as anybody else).

Anyway, today’s images are of the little details backstage that I’m so used to, sans the semi naked dancers. Of the three, my favourite is the dancers quick change area.
